Sea Turtle Walks and Patrol Tours in Costa Rica

SEASON: JUNE - DECEMBER
Experience the wonder of sea turtle walks in Costa Rica through our guided patrol tours along the beaches of Playa Palo Seco and Playa Hermosa, near Quepos and Jacó. These unforgettable night or early morning patrols offer an immersive way to observe nesting sea turtles in their natural habitat, while actively contributing to critical sea turtle conservation efforts and ecological awareness.
What Are Sea Turtle Walks?
Sea turtle walks are nighttime, or dawn patrols led by trained conservation guides along beaches where sea turtles are known to nest. These walks provide an ethical, educational wildlife encounter and are a highlight of sea turtle tourism in Costa Rica.
During each walk, participants patrol the beach looking for nesting turtles or fresh tracks that may indicate a new nest. When a nest is found, our team carefully collects the eggs and relocates them to a protected hatchery area. This ensures the highest possible survival rate by shielding the eggs from predators, poachers, and environmental risks.
Participants may:
- Witness sea turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs
- Observe fresh turtle tracks in the sand
- See conservationists carefully collecting and relocating eggs
- Encounter hatchlings emerging from nests and heading to the sea
Suggested Items:
- Beach shoes with toe protection
- Dark and breathable clothing
- Reusable water bottle
- Dry bag
Prohibited:
- Photography or filming (Photos will be provided)
- Light colored clothing
- Lights
- Pets
- Food
A Conservation Activity with Purpose
While these tours offer unforgettable wildlife experiences, they also serve an essential conservation purpose. Participants help monitor sea turtle activity, gather data, and ensure eggs and turtles are safe from poachers, predators, or environmental hazards. Many nests are relocated to protected hatcheries to improve hatchling survival rates.
By joining a sea turtle patrol tour, you directly support local conservation teams working to safeguard these endangered animals.
Tailored Experiences for All Visitors
Our turtle walks are designed to accommodate a wide range of guests, from eco-tourists and families to dedicated conservation volunteers.
Depending on your needs and fitness level, we offer:
- Shorter beach walks suitable for families or limited mobility participants
- Longer patrols for adventurous volunteers or researchers
- Special arrangements for visitors with disabilities or unique needs
Every walk is guided by experienced local conservationists who provide insight into turtle behavior, biology, and local ecology.
When and Where to Join
Turtle walks are available seasonally, primarily between July and December, during peak nesting activity.
Exact timing varies by turtle species and moon phase, but most patrols begin at dusk and last 2–4 hours.
Support Conservation and Learn Along the Way
Every tour includes a conservation briefing, guidance on how to minimize your impact, and opportunities to ask questions. Revenue from patrol walks goes directly to funding turtle conservation efforts, hatchery management, and community outreach.
