Reestablishing Our Sea Turtle Conservation Project on Isla Palo Seco, Costa Rica
We are proud to announce the reestablishment of our sea turtle conservation project near Quepos, Costa Rica, on the pristine shores of Isla Palo Seco. This marks an exciting new chapter in our mission to protect sea turtles in Costa Rica and preserve the biodiversity of the Pacific coast.
After two years of preparation, we have officially received our government permits to begin operations again. Our new conservation efforts are now supported by a dedicated non-profit organization called Conserve Aquatica, founded to advance research and protection of aquatic species in Costa Rica.
Protecting Sea Turtles in Costa Rica’s Pacific Region
Costa Rica is one of the most important countries in the world for sea turtle nesting, and Isla Palo Seco is a vital habitat for species such as the olive ridley, green, and hawksbill turtles. These sea turtles rely on undisturbed beaches like those near Quepos to nest and lay eggs during the peak seasons.
With increasing threats from coastal development, climate change, and illegal poaching, reestablishing this project is more urgent than ever. The Isla Palo Seco project focuses on safeguarding nests, supporting hatchling survival, and conducting non-invasive scientific research to guide long-term conservation strategies.
Introducing Conserve Aquatica
Our new foundation, Conserve Aquatica, is dedicated to the research and conservation of aquatic wildlife in Costa Rica. The sea turtle conservation project is our flagship program, but we also aim to expand into marine ecosystem monitoring and freshwater biodiversity studies.
Conserve Aquatica will lead volunteer programs, scientific research partnerships, and educational outreach from our base at Isla Palo Seco. We are building a network of passionate conservationists, researchers, and community members who care deeply about protecting sea turtles in Costa Rica.
Volunteer and Research Opportunities
Now that our permits are in place, we are welcoming volunteers, students, and researchers from around the world to participate in meaningful conservation work.
Activities include:
- Monitoring nesting females and hatchlings
- Conducting beach patrols to protect nests from poaching
- Collecting scientific data on nesting patterns and hatching success
- Engaging in habitat restoration and clean-up
- Supporting community education initiatives
These opportunities not only help protect sea turtles in Costa Rica but also provide invaluable field experience for marine biology students and early-career researchers.
A Community-Driven, Environmentally Focused Effort
Our project emphasizes sustainability, cultural respect, and minimal environmental impact. By partnering with local residents and promoting eco-conscious practices, we aim to create a conservation model that benefits both wildlife and nearby communities.
The support and collaboration of the people of Quepos and the surrounding region are essential to our success. We are working to ensure that conservation brings lasting benefits to both the natural world and the livelihoods of those who call this area home.
Sea Turtle Conservation Looking Ahead
The reestablishment of our sea turtle project in Costa Rica reflects our long-term commitment to ocean conservation. Isla Palo Seco provides a unique and under-researched setting where we can contribute valuable data to global sea turtle protection efforts.
As sea turtles face rising global threats, local action remains critical. Through Conserve Aquatica, we are creating opportunities for people to connect with nature, contribute to research, and directly impact the future of sea turtles in Costa Rica.
